Treatments for Removing Skunk Spray Smell From a Cat

There are many treatments for removing skunk spray smell from a cat. Some of these remedies work better than others. All are easy to administer with items found around the house. The most important thing to remember is to work quickly as the experience is painful for a cat and can irritate his highly developed sense of smell.

Step 1

Put on rubber gloves and wipe the cat down with paper towels. Remove as much of the skunk spray as possible.

Step 2

Create a skunk spray smell remover. Combine 1 quart of white vinegar with ½ cup of baking soda and 2 tbsp. of dishwashing liquid.

Step 3

Wet the cat in a tub of warm water. Wear rubber gloves and use the washcloth to work in the skunk spray smell remover. Concentrate on the areas that were directly hit. Leave the solution on the cat for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 4

Rinse the cat thoroughly and repeat the process until most of the smell is gone. It may take several applications before you notice a difference.

Step 5

Work a can of Coca Cola or Sprite into the cat’s fur. Rinse thoroughly. This step is optional but may provide enhanced odor removal.

Step 6

Blend 5 to 10 oranges in a heavy-duty blender. Add a few squirts of dish washing liquid. Lather the mixture onto the cat’s coat. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. This step is also optional but may help reduce odor.

Step 7

Follow with regular cat shampoo. Rinse thoroughly and leave the cat in an enclosed area or outside until the cat is completely dry.

Wash the cat as soon as possible. The sooner the smell is removed, the easier it will be to get rid of.

Visit your veterinarian if your cat has been sprayed directly in the eyes, nose or mouth. The cat will also require medical attention if vomiting, extreme lethargy or foaming at the mouth is experienced.

Do not allow the cat to touch anything or anyone in the house. The smell is easily transferred to other objects, pets and people.

Do not store the skunk spray smell remover in a container with a lid. The mixture of ingredients can cause pressure and the container could burst.

Do not get any of the bathwater into the cat’s eyes. It will burn severely. An application of Vaseline to the eyebrows will protect the eyes.
